Around the world, machinery and lines from the Reifenhäuser Group produce films and nonwovens for end products that have become basic to our quality of life. These include baby diapers, feminine hygiene products, and food packaging. As a supplier of production lines and machinery, we have the opportunity to significantly influence the amount of energy and raw materials required for the production of these products – by providing sustainable technologies.

What we understand under sustainable technology

We understand sustainable technology to mean a technology that has low impact on the environment and at the same time, enables our customers to successfully and profitably produce their products. We design our machinery and production lines to achieve high availability and superior product quality. In our research & development centers, we are working on further optimizing our processes and by association, the products, in respect to energy efficiency and raw material consumption.

Saving energy

We have continuously reduced the specific energy consumption of our lines with each new generation of technology. This continues to be our goal. In this, we consider the process as a whole but also the potential for optimization of individual components. This has resulted in numerous measures to reduce energy consumption, steps that have helped our customers produce more resource-efficiently and cost-efficiently.

Some of the energy efficiency activities of the Reifenhäuser Group:

  • Energy management using software for the reduction of load peaks
  • Induction heating used for heating of components
  • Recovery of heat from exhaust air
  • Reduction of lost heat by additional insulation
  • Adaptation of drive rating to required minimum
  • Recycling of brake energy of rotating masses
  • Change-over from conventional to climate-friendly refrigerants
  • Gas increasingly used as a primary energy carrier in the generation of heat for production lines
  • Calender housing
  • Concept of using combined heat and power units to supply the production lines with electric power and heat
  • Direct extrusion using vacuum venting (no need for pre-drying)
  • Change-over of line transport, as far as possible, from trucks to inland water vessels

Economizing on raw materials

With improvements to line technology over the past years, we have been able to achieve the required characteristics of products such as films and nonwovens with ever less cross-sectional weights. Every eliminated gram of cross-sectional weight helps to reduce energy, raw material and costs; in most cases without any change in the level of quality or the product characteristics. This “down gauging” will continue to be a priority in the future.

We are also further developing our technologies for processing recyclables (e.g. PET) and alternative raw materials (e.g. PLA and Lyocell) and are always on the search for new even higher-performing raw materials that would enable further material reduction.


Enabling the processing of alternative raw materials

Alternative raw materials only have a chance if they can be economically processed into high quality products. For this reason, we are developing technologies that are specially optimized for processing alternative raw materials such as PLA or Lyocell.


Waste reduction

Our goal: Only to produce what can be processed. This saves resources and enables customers to produce their products more economically. Developing intelligent controllers, highly precise technology and high levels of automation brings us ever closer to this goal.


Sustainable location



Development and production also play a role in the total energy consumption over the life of a technology. As a result, we have critically examined our own location and identified potentials for optimization of our energy use. For the future, we have set the following targets:



  • reduction in heating energy
  • reduction in power consumption
  • reduction in fuel consumption
